Basic Rules and Gameplay |
An American football game is played between two teams, each with a roster of up to 53 players (under NFL rules), though only 11 players from each team are on the field at any time. Players can be substituted freely throughout the game. |
The team that has possession of the ball is called the offense. Their goal is to move the ball forward into the opponent's territory to score by either running with the ball ("rushing") or throwing it forward ("passing"). The opposing team, the defense, aims to stop the offense from advancing and to regain possession of the ball. |
The game is divided into a series of plays called "downs." The offense has four attempts (downs) to move the ball at least ten yards. If successful, they earn a new set of four downs, known as a "first down," allowing them to continue advancing. If the offense fails to advance ten yards after four downs, possession of the ball is turned over to the opposing team, usually at the spot of the last play. |
